Help for British Nationals

Help for British Nationals in the BVI

Please note that as the British Virgin Islands is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom we do not provide consular services to visiting British Citizens as are provided in foreign countries.  Your first recourse should be to the local British Virgin Islands authorities, such as the police and hospital:

Emergency: 911 or 999
Police: (284) 494-2945
Hospital: (284) 494-3497

Other useful numbers are available in the local Yellow Pages.

The Governor’s Office will only assist British nationals in case of genuine emergency (such as death, serious illness, rape and child abduction) and where the local authorities are unable to assist.  In such cases the Duty Officer can be contacted 24/7 on: + 1 284 542-0009.

BVI Visa enquiries should be directed to the Visa Unit, Civil Registry & Passport Office (284) 494-3701 ext. 3035/3036.

BVI Passport enquiries, and first time British Citizen Passports, including Emergency Passports, should be directed to the British Virgin Islands Government Passport Office (284) 494-3701 ext. 3038.

Naturalisations to become a British Overseas Territories Citizen are dealt with by the Civil Registry & Passport Office (284) 494-3701 ext. 2128

Visas for the UK

The British High Commission in Barbados deals with all UK visa applications from the British Virgin Islands. Find out more.

British passport renewals

British citizen passport renewals should be directed to the British Embassy in Washington.

Consular Wardens

A few foreign embassies maintain a volunteer consular warden system in the British Virgin Islands to maintain communications with its own community and for assisting those nationals in times of distress.  Please contact your nearest embassy, high commission or consulate to see if a local warden is available to you.

British citizens living abroad can register to vote as an 'Overseas voter' to be eligible to vote in UK Parliamentary (general) elections and European Parliamentary elections in the UK.
